1) Valuable parent/child bonding time
As a father, I cannot begin to tell you how much fun we have engaging in shared game play. We achieve goals, celebrate accomplishments and learn from our losses. We each get to see each others reactions to different situations in the game, which often leads to more discussion. In my opinion, it assists with more learning for us both. For me, I get to learn more about my child and for her, she gets to learn more about me with seeing and hearing each others reactions and words during game play.
2) Controlled child social time
How many parents can say that they know exactly what is being said during their childs play time with other kids. And how about knowing what your child is hearing from other interactions with other adults. With our current game Fortnite, there are many adults also playing this game around the world. And by always playing with your child, you are able to monitor the communication, resulting in a more safe interaction with reduced probability of bullying or exposure to inappropriate words.
3) Increased problem solving skills
When we started our game play with Lego based video games, I found that the majority of the game consisted of having to figure out what needed to be done so the other player can continue progressing through the game. Certain objects had to be destroyed to reveal items needed or levers had to be pulled to activate something. Player suits had to be switched to be able to do different things to be able to advance. Hints were given and directions had to be followed. Awards were available to be earned. I believe my daughter received some incredible skills that will help her develop into a more high functioning adult.
4) Improved eye/hand coordination
This doesn't need further explanation. Watching a screen while manipulating the game controller to be able to achieve the needed tasks and missions.
5) Enhancing child attention to detail
The graphics on these games are amazing. And therefore, the ability to put so much detail into the characters and environment, to allow the opportunity for the players to immerse themselves into the game. Each player really has to focus continuosly to be able to master the skills and achieve success on each mission.
6) Expanded child imagination and ability to control a virtual world
The games we have played and are currently playing allow us to launch into a virtual world. A world that we are free to manipulate autonomously. We can drive cars, tanks, motorcycles, boats, fly planes and choppers or as a superhero with a cape. Children do not get to control much in their worlds in real life. Game play like this gives them an opportunity to do so in a simulator type environment.
My recommended game to play is Fortnite. Yes there are guns and violence. But in my opinion that is ok. The game is not a gory type of game as there is no blood. The opponent eliminations are mild. It is a free game to download but expect to spend lots on the extras - like player skins, dances, and accessories.
